Blooded Veteran – Blood Angels Sgt. of the 3rd company

I’ve always thought that the paintings and drawings from the various rule books and codices that make up the 2nd edition of 40k in combination with the miniature design created the aesthetic of the 41st millennium. While the miniatures of that era (rightful classics that they are) have been superseded in detail and scale, the paintings and drawings remain the definitive vision.

I took inspiration for the modelling and painting of this miniature from one of the greatest of these paintings.

The setting is clear, interior stairs of a cathedral. I decided on sandstone as I supposed that Baal being a desert planet that would be preferred.

Next was the pose, it took quite a bit of work to get one leg higher than the other but I think it came out really nice.

The hair has always seemed to me to be an important part of this image and required extra effort to get right.

When painting I wanted to get that he was lit by a shaft of light shining through a window, basically a spotlight.

Thanks for looking, Jamie.
